Sabbatical Week 42 – Buyu Goes Places

Sabbatical Week 42

It’s been a week since I got back to the States. Finally got the whole house burglary under control and things are going in order.

1 week before I start working again – April Fools day. It’s not a joke but I will not get my first year bonus and rewards because of this tragic timing. Perhaps, partially this is on me. Had I chosen to come back home just 2 days earlier, I would have made before the cut-off. This is about $50k loss in 4 years. Not significant, but still making me really not happy.

Day 1

(I think I messed up last week’s post that I posted Day 1 on the previous week)

Day 2

Waking just before dawn to take the ferry to another island

In just two hours we arrived at Isabela Island

They boobies!

I got to the hotel just passed 9am and the room wasn’t ready yet. I chit chatted a bit with some swiss and then headed out for breakfast

For $6 this is amazing, the ball thingy is a local specialty with Plantain bacon

Bumped into someone from my previous hostel, we decided heading to the beach and bike to the viewpoints

Random tortoise on the road
The view is really nice, kinda reminded me of Hawaii
It’s extremely hot, and I still had my long hair
The wall is something called Wall of Tears – a prison punishment
Volcanoes at the far north side of the island

Time to head back.

We stopped by a mangrove for a swim

Some island giant iguana

After some refreshment, I headed to the Flamingo lake in town.

Dinner was at a local fast food place

pretty good for $7 with fresh fish!

Day 3

Finally some long waited snorkled.

First was this seahorse.

After a bit rough boat ride, we were ready get into water

Actually it’s a pair, hmm.

I was actually pretty afraid of accidentally touching them, they get awkwardly close to us swimmers
The sharks are definitely the highlight
Those things are actually alive. I’ve only seen dead shells on shores before
Mr. Handsome
Ray
Another highlight

Lastly, we got on the land to see the tunnels which are formed by hardening from volcanic activities.

Unfortunately, due to most of the guests could speak Spanish so the explanation was unfortunately also done in Spanish in which I didn’t quite get the geographical history
Dinner at a ceviche place

Day 4

Cooking and relaxing day

Kinda nice to chill out on a beach with almost no one around

Time slipped by rather quickly, it’s sunset time

Day 5

Check-out time from my hotel was early at 9am, I had nothing much planned but to hop on a plane ride to another island.

chill out time
My plane and boarding

First time riding a commercial one pilot plane.

Landing!
View from my hotel!

Went out for a sunset walk

Beer and sealions!

It amazes me that the most reliable internet provider on the island is actually Elon’s Starlink.

Day 6

Booked another island tour called 360 tour to check out every around the island

Wave is really rough, and the captain was trying to catch some fish for us to snack on

We did catch half.

A shark took the other
Nice shallow water to swim

We stopped and snorkled a bit – to be honest, it’s not too interesting and different than the one I had from a different island. I didn’t take many photos

Arriving at the stone arch

We snorkeled more around that rocks. Many dories and nemos. Saw some giant rays.

The red bird is quite rare called Fargate
I wish I had a better camera

It’s the German guy’s birthday, we decided to go out for drinks and dinner

The curfew was still going on, I headed back before 11pm. They were out to party more with the locals.

Day 7

Last day, a hiking day!

Got up early to walk around the island

A complete empty beach just me and wildlifes
Thanks Darwin!

Lunch was at a local place.

Pork liver I think

Sunset walk

Reminded me of home – the Pacific Coast
Another gorgeous $5 dinner

  1. Sorry about the Microsoft bonus timing, that is frustrating.

These adventures and photos have been one of my favorite of your relaxing posts! The underwater photos of the snorkeling are great and I wonder if you just used your smartphone.

That’s funny Starlink is the fastest Internet there. I thought they should have some good underwater fiber optic cables to each island.

Great photos of the special birds as well! You are right, it is awesome to have a good camera and lens to capture the far away birds. But, the extra weight and risk of being stolen are a bummer.

Thanks for still finding the time to post with things going on!
