Sabbatical Week 46 – Buyu Goes Places

Sabbatical Week 46

As much as I would like to go visit Chile and Argentina. I’ve decided to take a job home. That in turns translates to cutting my travel short, or rather getting my life back to “normal”. The burglary and the aftermath of it meant that I was far from being normal. I was running away and I was scared to go home. I figured, staying with folks I’ve met during this travel could somehow help with my journey home.

That is, I decided to go to Peru again and eventually later to El Salvador simply wanting to spend time with people I know.

Day 1

Sunny Sunday again!

Food bank at the city square

Managed to convince a German to go to town with me.

$2.5 breakfast. Protein for the win haha. The German is a vegetarian

We wandered to some museums

Dragon glass

Soon was lunch time

I’d say the spaniards did an amazing job at creating those courtyards

It’s beer time and say goodbye to my German friend for the day

The bartender who can speak German

Last meal in Quito

Ordered some KFC

Day 2

Bye Quito
Stopover at Panama
Local beer at the lounge
Livery was funny

Arriving at Chiclayo. The northern food capital of Peru. At the immigration, a Police officer was very happy to help (He’s Chinese descent) and could speak fluent English to help me translate. He even spoke some Chinese with me.

It’s an interesting part of the country where you rarely see Asian tourists. Yet, you can feel the energy from locals whose ancestors might share with where I am from. Everyone seemed to be eager to tell me someone he knows is a Chinese.

Some goat. for $10.

I didn’t have much planned in town but to stop over and heading down south.

Day 3

Long bus ride towards Trullijo

A Peruvian Chinese dish – beef stir fry

My hostel

Day 4

Bus to Chan Chan – another ingenious ruin

Found a restaurant that’s recommended by a tour guide.

This was phenomenal for like $7. Full quarter duck

Afternoon was to see another ruin in the region

Those were artifacts from Moche era. Peru simply had way too much ancient civilizations. It’s a shame only Incan is widely known and broadcasted.

Day 5

Very long bus ride to Huaraz to see a German who’s volunteering there.

Finally some green space in which I know I am getting close to the Andes
Bus lunch stop – Ceviche de Pollo
Huaraz

The amount of Chinese restaurants in town was insane. Of course, the reunion lunch was Chinese

We spent quite a few hours after dinner to catch up. We were both excited.

Day 6

Good morning

Even at this rainy season, there’s beautiful blue sky almost everyday. How incredible

(Chatted with a French lady who’s volunteering at a Children’s center. I’d say as much as how I wanted to complain this hostel was dominated by French – largely due to the owner is from Belgium, I want to say every single French I’ve met was incredibly nice and lovely. Why didn’t I study French and move to Europe?)

My buddy decided to take me on a hike near town

German got show off

Met with a couple of Dutch which translated us in getting another Chinese meal

Random celebration near our hostel while I was getting beers

Day 7

Another hiking day with a group of French

Not my breakfast. The French loved to cook
The middle woman is from Spain. She works at a emergency room in a hospital as a physician. She’s older than me too. This is where I love travelling, you meet people from all backgrounds. No status quo whatsoever
Perhaps no surprise I’ve been losing weight quite a bit there as a result of ascending above 4k meters on daily basis
Thomas shared his delicious pasta

Thomas needed a hug

This was definitely one of the highlights of my trip. We decided to make dinner together later.

Sangria from scratch from a Spaniard
The French made crepes from scratch

  1. Good for you to go to Peru again and reunite with others and keep making new friends! I particularly liked the Chan Chan ruins and artifacts and am impressed how you can hike and ascend 4k meters on a daily basis! You earned your delicious food and drink, for sure.
